What are Dozuki Japanese saws used for?

Of all types of Japanese saws, the Dozuki provides the most precise and clean cuts. To do this, it is equipped with the fine/very fine saw teeth. A Dozuki Japanese saw generally has a TPI (teeth per inch) of 17 or higher. The high number of saw teeth is perfect for cutting hardwood, sheet material and even plastic (better than saws with lower TPI's).

The Japanese Dozuki saw also makes excellent saw cuts in softer woods. Note, however, that a coarser saw ( Kataba or Ryoba type ) will work faster through softer woods. However, a Dozuki generally produces more precise cuts.

Please note that the back reinforcement of a Dozuki Japanese saw limits the achievable depth. For deep cuts, there are also Dozuki saws without back reinforcement.

If a Dozuki without a back is too flexible for you, a fine-toothed Ryoba or Kataba is excellent. Remember that the saw cut will be slightly wider when used.
